Obama this week chose Sen. Joseph Biden, an aging icon of old-time liberal Democratic politics, as his running mate. In his acceptance speech Thursday at the Democratic Party's National Convention, Obama called for change again.

On Friday, McCain announced his running mate will be Sarah Palin, Alaska's woman-governor. She is a relative newcomer to politics but how bad can that be, considering that Biden, by contrast, is an old hand who has lost consistently in his bid for the nation's highest office.
You have to love surprises in American politics, but this one is particularly sweet for Republicans who might not have wholeheartedly welcomed VP choices like Mike Huckabee or, especially, Joe Leiberman, one of the rumored choices and a steal from the Democratic Party.
Given Hillary Clinton's treatment by the Obama camp this week, the choice of Palin is particularly wise on the part of McCain, who demonstrates his maverick status yet again.
Getting off to a grand start earlier this year, McCain outmaneuvered Mitt Romney in a somewhat bitter contest marked by the same competitiveness that was the hallmark of the Obama/Clinton contest, only not as drawn-out.

Raising the Bar in American
Politics Puts GOP on Top
Sarah Palin is a Life Member of the NRA. It has not been unusual for her and her family to rise at 4 a.m. and go moose-hunting.
Well, Alaska would do well to expand the open season to include jackasses (as would the rest of the USA).
